Understanding Commercial Auto Insurance Policy Limits and Deductibles

Commercial auto insurance is crucial for businesses that depend on vehicles for daily operations. It can offer coverage for various risks associated with business vehicles, including accidents, theft and damage. Two critical components of commercial auto insurance are policy limits and deductibles.

Policy Limits

Policy limits indicate the highest amount an insurance company will pay for a covered loss. These limits are defined in the insurance policy and can vary depending on the type of coverage. For example, a commercial auto insurance policy might include limits for bodily injury, property damage and uninsured motorist coverage. Each of these limits specifies the maximum payout for claims related to that coverage.

For instance, if a policy has a bodily injury limit of $500,000 per person and $1 million per accident, the insurer will pay up to $500,000 for injuries to one person and up to $1 million for all injuries resulting from a single accident. Business owners should choose appropriate policy limits for adequate financial protection against potential losses.

Deductibles

A deductible is the out-of-pocket amount the policyholder must pay before the insurance coverage starts. Deductibles apply to collision and comprehensive coverages, which can help financially protect against damage to the insured vehicle from accidents, theft, vandalism and other incidents. For instance, if a business vehicle is damaged in a covered accident and the cost for repairs is $4,000, with a $500 deductible, the policyholder will have to pay $500, and the insurer may cover the remaining $3,500.

Higher deductibles typically lead to lower insurance premiums because the policyholder assumes greater financial responsibility for minor claims. However, lower deductibles typically result in higher premiums with more affordable out-of-pocket costs when a claim occurs.
